Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) Needed in U.S.
26 June 2007
You have a right to know as much
about the origins of your seafood as possible. One important law, known as
Country of Origin Labeling, or COOL, states that seafood must be labeled to
indicate its country of origin and whether it was wild-caught or farm-raised.
Unfortunately, this law exempts all processed seafood from these labeling
requirements- which means only about 50 percent of the seafood sold in stores
has a COOL label.
At this time, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which
is responsible for the COOL program, is seeking public comments to determine the
future of the COOL program. We think they should hear from you!
