The Virgin
Islands Environmental Council (VIEC) needs your help to win a groundbreaking
legal case to save the British Virgin Island's (BVI's) Hans Creek Fisheries
Protected Area from certain destruction at the hand of a pending mega resort
development, including a five-star hotel, condominiums, villas, deep water
marina, and golf course.
Hans Creek is one of the most significant
fish nurseries in the BVI and is one of the few remaining areas with large
stands of pristine mangroves and healthy coral reefs. The importance of Hans Creek
and the surrounding area has been recognized by international scientific
studies. This natural treasure will undergo unavoidable and significant damage
as a result of the mega-resort development, including destruction of mangroves
and seagrass beds, degradation of coral reefs, and pollution of coastal waters.
The VIEC has secured a team of expert environmental lawyers to fight the case.
There is a strong legal argument for preventing the development, and the VIEC
and its lawyers are confident in our ability to win the case, but we need
your help
to raise the necessary $25,000 to fight the case, save this precious
resource, and set an important precedence for environmental protection
in the Islands. Any contribution you can make, large or small,
will be greatly appreciated. Donations can be made via the following
